Here at Sunset church, one of the areas that we want to grow in in Sunset is our obedience to God’s call for us to make disciples of all nations. Part of that call is strengthening the relationships we have with those whom we send out.
In his third letter, the apostle John instructs his friend Gaius of the importance of supporting missionaries. John says, “Beloved, it is a faithful thing you do in all your efforts for these brothers, strangers as they are, who testified to your love before the church. You will do well to send them on their journey in a manner worthy of God. For they have gone out for the sake of the name, accepting nothing from the Gentiles. Therefore we ought to support people like these that we may be fellow workers of the truth.” (3 John 5-8)
We are called, as fellow workers of the truth, to support our missionaries in a manner worthy of God, as if it was Jesus whom we are supporting and sending out. We must then take an active role in caring for our missionaries. Consider joining this workshop and learn how you can be involved in God’s mission as a sender.
In this workshop you will be equipped, as senders, in caring well for our missionaries. Not only that, but you will also be able to train others with the result that missionaries are cared for, feel connected and are able to continue in their missionary calling.
AS PARTICIPANTS, YOU WILL HAVE:
Explored and summarized the biblical basis of missionary care.
Identified the most common missionary needs in each dimension and season of missionary life.
Analyzed the different ways missionaries are cared for and determine which areas our church should be responsible for in the future.
Recognized obstacles and gaps that might exist in caring for missionaries supported by our church.
Proposed action steps to continue and improve missionary care; especially by recruiting others in Sunset to use their spiritual gifts, life experiences and interests in joining a care community.
Been introduced to resources available to help our church care well for the missionaries we support.
Our facilitators and speakers for this workshop are David and Doris Nichols from OMF. After serving in the Philippines with OMF International for 26 years in church planting, theological education and missionary care, David and Doris Nichols transitioned to a role in the U.S. in 2013 to equip and care for OMF missionaries. They consult with local churches to provide training and resources in missionary care and debriefing.
