Sunset Church's Men, Children, and Worship Ministries Update
We restarted the Men's Ministry in 2016! Kicking off with a Men's Retreat in February, we had over 80 men learning from Justin Buzzard about Men in Leadership. Our surveys showed that the most enjoyable part was meeting and developing relationships with other men from church. Many men wanted more: more small group time, more inter-generational activities!
We followed the retreat with Saturday morning (8am!) breakfasts featuring speakers from among our pastors, staff and elders. Topics revolved around the marks of a disciple. Small group discussion allowed us to share and apply our learnings.
For 2017, we want to continuing creating opportunities for men to build community and become more mature disciples. Our Men's Retreat will be held from 5/19 - 5/21 on the topic of Navigating the World as Men of God. We will continue our monthly Saturday breakfast series and likely add some support for men in leadership. We will also steer men towards service in existing church ministries.
2016 Children’s Ministry Recap
An Eventful Year in Children’s Ministry
2016 was a great year in the Children’s Ministry. One of the most exciting things was how much of the Old Testament we covered in Sunday School. In January of 2016 we were in the book of Genesis studying the life of Joseph. By December we finished our study of the minor prophets with studies on Hosea, Jonah, and Joel. We walked through a lot of the Old Testament and got to see God’s faithfulness to his people despite their faithlessness. We saw God unfold his plan of sending a Messiah to save people from their ultimate problem, sin.
2016 was also a very eventful year, literally. We had a lot of big events this past year. Easter was a celebration that included a multi-media presentation of the story of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Harvest Festival was big outreach campaign to love the community around us and welcome them into our church. God was working during Harvest Festival because there was a great turn out from our community. During the Christmas season we also had a Christmas Family Celebration where parents and kids played carnival games, enjoyed food and earned prizes. We are so thankful that God was working in building and strengthening relationships between our church, our community, and Sunset families during this very eventful year.
In 2016 Sunset Worship has been working hard to minimize distractions and improve musical excellence. We’ve been working on this through improving the musical skills of the team and learning to play tighter as a band. We have also, more recently, been working on training up new worship leaders and challenging the existing team members to explore their untapped potential. It has been a fun year as the team has been learning how to have fun, raise the standard, and lead the church in worship each week.
For 2017, Sunset Worship has simplified mission statement, to raise up worshipers and worship leaders. We want worshipers to be born out of our worship services, people to come to know Jesus through our songs and through our times of corporate worship, and we also want to continue to raise up worship leaders so that we can lead more people into worship and be ready to send worship leaders to help staff future expansion efforts, be it sending people out for multi-site, church planting, or even missions. In addition to this, one of our spiritual goals this year is to read the Bible in a year together through the Readscripture app.
