Joy To The World
Written by Theo L.
“Joy to the world! The Lord has come! Let Earth receive her king!” I can’t count how many times I’ve sung those Christmas lyrics. And yet, it took me years (even decades) to really contemplate what those words mean. Those words are far deeper than I realized as a child. Those words are a declaration that joy has come in to the world through the birth of the Savior, Jesus Christ. Joy is here!
When I really think about these words I feel like a little kid whose best friend has arrived at the front door. “Joy is here! Joy is here! Yay! Joy is here!” Joy is here because the Lord has arrived. Now let that truth sink in. God himself has arrived. God. Is. Here. (Matt. 1:23). The God who created the entire Universe. The one who placed the stars in their place, the one who breathed breath into Adam, the one who keeps the world spinning, the one who has all power, is here! He is here with us! How? He is here with us because he took the form of a man. But he came not a powerful super-man, but as a baby. God is here with us because this humble baby has been born! And now that this baby has been born, let Earth receive her king! This baby is our king (Luke 1:21-33). Not a king that comes to lord his power over us, a king that came to die for us (Phil. 2:5-11). This king has come to save his people from their sins (Matt. 1:21). This king came not to conquer Rome, but to do something far greater: defeat sin and death. Sin is what separates us from God (Rom. 3:23). And sin must be defeated, and we can’t do it. God didn’t leave us to flail in the mud of our own sin. God sent Jesus to rescue us from our sin (Eph. 2:1-10)! And this is why joy is here! Joy is here because rescue has come! This is why Christians celebrate the Christmas season! This is why we sing with joy filling our hearts! We sing Christmas truths because joy and hope have entered the world through Jesus!
