We exist to glorify God by making gospel-transformed disciples of all people, in our city, and in the world.
In this 2017 Annual Report, we want to share highlights of how Jesus has been moving in our church, city, and world.
As we looked at John’s gospel last year one passage continues to resonate.
"Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing." [John 15:4-5]
This passage reminds us that we need to have a posture of dependence when it comes to ministry. We must remember that ministry is a work of Jesus, not a work of man. It is Jesus who builds His church.

Baptisms are a joyous time for us as our brothers and sisters in Christ publically proclaim their faith in Christ.
Baptism is a symbol of what Christ has done through his death and resurrection. Just as Christ died and rose from the dead, baptism symbolizes that we die with Christ and are raised to new life in Christ! It signifies that your former way of life has been put to death and you are now released from the power of sin. (Rom. 6:1-11)
In obedience to Christ's command and as a testimony to God, the Church, and the world, a believer should be immersed in water in the name of the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit. "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit" (Matt. 28:19).
Numbers are based on both English and Cantonese congregation.
Pulse Of Sunset
We finished the year with 40 small groups.
by the end of the year, there were 412 people attending a small group.
A total of 19 new members joined Sunset.
New members are based on both English and Cantonese congregation.
In the City and The World
A small team spent time in East Asia to encourage local missionaries reaching the unreached people groups. They also spent time identifying future opportunities to reach those same groups.
Africa Compassion Trip
11 people traveled to Zambia on a short-term project focused on encouragement in 2017 to work with our partner organization, Hands at Work. The team was there to encourage, disciple and lift up the care workers who are working with the most vulnerable children in Zimba and other communities. This team also had opportunities to work with the local churches in Zimba (through direct meetings with their pastors) to encourage them through prayer and scripture to be engaged in their community.
We had a total of 16 team members from both the Cantonese & English congregation join the Cambodia STM trip in 2017. The Sunset team was serving with the Pleroma school for the girls sharing the gospel through VBS, English camp, Parenting workshops, village visitation, teachers' workshops.
We also serve with the local church in passing out "Jesus Love you" t-shirt and pray for the each household as we visited their homes.
NEXT has served alongside Sunset Church to help pastors plant churches in cities around the capitol city of San Jose, situated in the heart of the country, as well as in the northern provinces of Alajuela and Guanacaste.
When Hurricane Harvey made landfall Aug. 25, it was the largest storm to strike the United States in over a decade. Over the next several days, Harvey, then a tropical storm, dropped unprecedented amounts of rain in Houston and surrounding areas. Our volunteers helped with clearing trees from homes and yards, tarping roofs, and performing mud-outs. Most importantly, they demonstrate the love of God and share the hope of Christ with flood-weary homeowners.
Santa Rosa, California
The Tubbs Fire, the most destructive wildfire in California history, impacted Napa, Sonoma, and Lake counties in Northern California in October 2017. Multiple teams from Sunset church went to those communities to help support the rebuilding efforts.

Looking Towards 2018
There were some great moments in 2017 as we continued to grow in our local and global efforts in the gospel. Of special note, the church stepped up to meet the needs of those hurting by hurricanes Harvey and Irma by giving sacrificially of finances and time as we were able to send a team to help in relief efforts. We should celebrate this yet remember that it is Jesus who deserves the glory.
John 15:4-5 also reminds us to abide in Jesus. It is easy to assume a relationship with Jesus as we are doing things for Jesus. We must remember that ministry activity is never a replacement for our relationship with Jesus. We want to strive ambitiously for Jesus’ glory while at the same time acknowledge our complete dependence on him. This is going to be on the forefront of how we approach 2018’s efforts.
In 2018 we will be looking at the Psalms, Proverbs, and Minor Prophets to help abide in Jesus and his heart. In addition, be on the lookout for a few of prayer and growth efforts that we want our church to prioritize and join us as we learn to abide in Jesus.
We’re excited for what God has in store for our church in 2018, and want to thank you for your faithful service, giving, and prayer to the ministry at Sunset Church.
