At Sunset Church, we are concerned about the spiritual as well as physical and emotional well being of others. We strive to live out the Gospel of Jesus Christ in both word and deed. SJM’s theme verse is Isaiah 1:17:
Learn to do good; seek justice, rescue the oppressed, defend the orphan, plead for the widow.
The Social Justice Ministry seeks to promote awareness of and involvement in ministries that promote the whole Gospel.
The following are a few of the ministries that the Social Justice Ministry is supporting.
APC is a Christian service organization that assists individuals and families dealing with unplanned pregnancies. Free client services include pregnancy testing, counseling, and parenting classes. They provide maternity/infant-children's clothing and free diapers.
Because Justice Matters is a Christian ministry located in the Tenderloin of San Francisco. BJM works with women and their families who face various forms of injustice, with a focus on issues of sexual exploitation, poverty, domestic violence and immigrant discrimination.
City Impact is a Christian organization whose ministry is focused on serving the needs of people in the Tenderloin. They are committed in sharing the Gospel and serving needs at multiple levels—meal distribution, thrift store, rescue mission, medical clinic, school for K to 8th grade.
City Team is a Christian ministry planted in the heart of South of Market . It has three main areas of outreach including an alcohol recovery program for men, outreach to the local SROs (single resident occupancies), and foot washing / clothes distribution / meal service to the homeless.
Freedom House provides safe, transitional housing for survivors of human trafficking in the Bay Area and helps them rebuild their lives by providing psychological and spiritual support, assisting with their language skills and education, and helping them find employment.
International Justice Mission is a human rights agency that brings rescue to victims of slavery, sexual exploitation and other forms of violent oppression in 13 countries. The rescued victims are provided aftercare to allow them to rebuild their lives. IJM is also involved in supporting vital legislation to address human trafficking both in the US and abroad.
My Refuge House is an Aftercare Shelter in Cebu, Philippines that was founded by a small church group in Southern California. This newly expanded safe haven is for victims of human trafficking.
